There was a man in the village of Caosti who lived with his hound. Though the dog grew old and useless, the man refused to put it down, instead taking care of the creature against all reason.
When the food got scarce, his family ordered him to no longer feed the animal and forced him to take it to the forest and leave it there to fend for itself.
So he did, and as he returned home, his duty complete, he fell deathly ill from sorrow and died not a moon later.
On the night of his death, the dog returned to the village – not as an animal, but a hellish beast. Its eyes glowed red, its fur smoked like hot coals. It went for the blood and flesh of every villager, sparing not a soul.
Once sated, it lay on its master's grave and joined him in death.
