Mevasser is a Jewish rabbi, living in Neustadt district in Svartrau. Even though Brencis forbade practising any religion except the Blood Covenant, the Svartrau Jews continue to defy him – secretly. They're taking a big risk, and that's probably why Mevasser has been so cautious towards Crake and myself. He's clearly a wise man, respected by his community and with vast knowledge. He'd be of great use for the manumits.
