Not many people know this, but there was a time when one could easily meet a Teutonic Knight in the Carpathians.
The former crusaders were invited here in the year 1211, for the usual reasons – they were meant to defend the Kingdom of Hungary against the invading Cumans. They quickly pushed back the invaders and started making themselves comfortable, building and expanding their own settlements.
At some point, the Hungarian ruler, King Andrew II of Hungary, said: "Enough" and expelled the knights – to the displeasure of the Pope, who had his share in the knights’ profits.
