Saint Tobias: The One-Armed Monk

Life of the founder of Svartrau Cathedral.

Among the patrons of Vale Sangora, none is more renowned and respected than Saint Tobias, the one-armed monk. A pious and humble man in life, Tobias did not seek power or influence; yet both of those attributes were given to him by Divine Ordination.

Before attaining sainthood, as a lowly monk he travelled around the valley, getting to know its people and secrets. At some point, his paths crossed with a warrior tasked to protect the Sangorans – that man, as you probably already guessed, was none other but Saint Mihai, the patron of Svartrau Cathedral.

Together, Tobias and Mihai shared many adventures – during which the monk’s knowledge of the valley and his prowess in winning over people’s hearts proved to be a boon. They became fast allies, sharing a common goal to protect Vale Sangora from evil. At some point he was able to convert Mihai – the warrior forsook his pagan ways and welcomed Christ in his heart.

Unfortunately, both their friendship and quest would have a tragic end when they ventured into the dire swamps near Maragir. In there, they were able to slay a monstrous ghast, but they both paid a price for the deed. Tobias lost his arm; Mihai took the brunt of the battle on himself and was killed – but not before he dealt their foe a mortal wound as well.

Tobias returned with his friend’s body to Svartrau. To honour Mihai’s memory, the warrior was anointed and became the patron of the Cathedral. As for the one-armed monk – he lived for many more years, leading the communities of Vale Sangora to God’s grace. In time, all his hard work and the miracles he performed were rewarded – Tobias entered sainthood and, to this day, is considered the main patron of our Valley.
