Hunter's Journal

Notes of a huntsman bested by his prey.

Day 9 of the Autumn Hunt

It has been a good year. The woods are quiet, rabbits are plentiful, and deer regularly come to the river. Today, I tracked a fine buck and brought him down with a clean shot. Then I lucked into a doe as well. Dressing them both will keep me busy for some time. I must dry the meat and prepare the hides for the market.

Day 14 of the Autumn Hunt

With little time for stalking game, I’ve been checking my traps each day. Five rabbits so far, all fat and healthy. Skinned and salted them at once. With their meat and the deer’s, I could head back home soon.

Day 15 of the Autumn Hunt

The woods are not as quiet as I thought. Today I caught sight of... something. Found its tracks, but it’s no deer, no wolf, not a bear. Too long in the foot, with a heel like a man’s, but the stride is all wrong.

Day 17 of the Autumn Hunt

I saw it clearly at dawn – a shape like a man but somewhat twisted. The cursed thing hunts by night, leaving its prey in a mess, the meat shredded, and the hides spoiled. Thus, I’ve decided to put it down. I just need to figure out how to lure it in first.

Day 20 of the Autumn Hunt

I tried a few lures, but in the end, I seem to be the best bait. The creature lingers at the edge of camp, watching. I’ve ringed the fire with snares, but that didn’t work, so tonight, I will try something else – lay out my bedroll as a decoy and take to the trees myself. If I’m lucky enough, I should finally corner that thing.

And kill it.
