Saint Anthony became well known for his strict asceticism. In his youth, he travelled to Mount Athos, where he lived in a cave as a hermit. Later, he was sent by his abbot to bring monasticism to his native Rus’. Near Kiev, he again chose the solitude of a cave, devoting himself to prayer and fasting. From these humble beginnings arose the great Kyiv Pechersk Lavra – the Monastery of the Caves.
