Chronicle: Skender's Last Days

A story of the former knyaz's long-lost treasures.

After they dealt with the wretched Knyaz Skender, Brencis and his future boyars headed to Greifberg Castle. They entered it without resistance, as the soldiers defending the keep hated Skender as much as Brencis himself had.

But it soon became clear that the castle had been plundered. Skender's dishonourable underlings managed to hastily gather their liege's treasures, pack them onto wagons and flee to the mountains.

When Brencis realised what happened, he dispatched a pursuit party, led by Boyar Ambrus. The thieves were swiftly caught just as they were about to cross the Northern Cleft bridge leading out of the valley.

Ambrus honourably promised them that if they forsook the stolen treasures, they would be free to leave. But the thieves, blinded by greed, chose to do otherwise. They foolishly scurried off, which meant sending the heavy carts on a weathered mountain bridge.

And before anyone managed to put their feet on the other side, the bridge collapsed. The thieves, their horses and all the carts fell into the bottomless abyss. The screams and cries of greedy dying men echoed among the mountains for hours, until finally – there was silence. And the treasures were never to be found again.

Such was the end of the wretched Knyaz Skender and his lavish, tainted riches.
