A Very Old Letter

Signed by a long-dead bishop of Vale Sangora.

My dearest cousin,

I hope that your new grange serves you well. The knyaz wanted to give it to one of his lackeys, but I was able to persuade him that it’s God’s will that you have it. Valerian was not lying when he said that Tiberiu has no real backbone – how hard have the Boarescus fallen since Dacian’s death!

I’m glad to inform you that the seat of the bishopric suits me well. Svartrau is a magnificent city and I enjoy every moment of my stay here. Food, garments, even women – indeed, there’s nothing beyond my reach now. Of course, there’s hard work involved, too. I’m currently focusing on rebuilding the cathedral. We shall add an almshouse! Yes, let it be known that the paupers and the sick have a place in my heart – as long as they stay out of my sight.

The future looks bright indeed, and be sure that the grange is just the beginning, cousin.

Stay in health.

Yours,

Athanasius, Bishop of Vale Sangora
