A Hero's Folly, part 1

As he stepped into the silvery stream, Euhemeros knew that his life would change forever. The naiads were capricious beings, but they never lied. And he held up to his end of the bargain: the hippocampus whose crude jokes had offended them many times in the past now lay dead, slayed by his hand. Thus, Euhemeros was allowed to bathe in the stream guarded by the naiads. As he waded into the water, he felt the primordial powers fly through him. From this day on, he could use godlike magic and every time he did so, it bolstered his spirit and allowed him to do even more. He was destined to become one of the greatest heroes. But what he did not realise is that by slaying the poor hippocampus, he had sealed his own fate.
